Day 5 - I'm gonna be thin with a grin

Stepped on the scales this morning to a delightful 201.5. This is probably not legit but it looks nice.

I ate hardly anything yesterday, only a granola bar and a little bit of trail mix. I did induldge substantially in some beverages last night to the tune of at least 1000 calories. I think my weight today is somewhat due to dehydation but when I grab my stomach with my hands, there is less hanging out the side than there was a week ago.

I think I am getting there. I am falling off the wagon for lunch though. Not sure what it's gonna be yet, but I'm gonna like it.

Day 4 - Man cannot live on pork alone

Stepped on the scale this morning to a bittersweet 206.5 pounds. I think this is good.

Yesterday things changed a little. Boiled peanuts for lunch. But my balanced and delicious dinner which was cooked by my lovely wife consisted of salmon cakes, pinto beans, and brocolli with mushrooms. I also ate yogurt and berries before going to sleep. Lot of carbs here but the positive is, I don't think ALL of the 5.5 pounds I have lost 3 days into this experiment are glycogen and water.

The main purpose here is to evolve this diet into something tolerable for a regular dude that is not the equivalent of torture. I want to lose at lot of weight and friggin' fast, and without substantial exercise, but I don't have the willpower to torture myself to do it. The first few days on a no carb diet, anything with the smallest amount of sugar looks almost irresistable. I mean, I'm paying for gas at a gas station and I kid you not I am looking at tootsie rolls beside the register like an addict looks at crack, nearly salivating on the counter. I can't go around with cravings like this for a month, not gonna work.

The Atkins, South Beach, etc. folks will tell you that you are in fact addicted to sugar, and it is necessary to break your sugar addicition in these first few days of the diet. I dunno, maybe so, but not for me. Another thing I will say about these low carb diets, they never mention that half of that 8-13 pounds you are supposed to lose in the induction phase is water and glycogen. Tricky bastards. Don't you think people trying to lose FAT might want to know that?

Tomorrow morning is a big morning because although I have not had any ice cream or alcohol since I started this thing, I am NOT giving up booze with Thursday night football, especially the first games of the season. Tonight will be Coke Zero and bourbon, still tryng to stay away from the beer. We'll see if a man can still tie one on every now and then and still drop a few pounds.

Middle of Day Three

Stepped on the scale this morning to a disappointing 206 pounds, but I had my underwear on so I'm probably still 205.5. I also figured out the reason I lost 6.5 pounds the first day was mostly gylcogen & water loss from having no carbs, your body burns off glycogen first, which is apparently some heavy stuff. My gut is unfortunately still the same size.

Last night was rough. I got home and was craving carbs like a ravenous beast. I ate a South Beach diet peanut butter bar in about 2 bites and that thing was good. I opened up every cabinet in the kitchen looking for a suitable dinner and settled on two cans of tuna. Ate half of the first can, nasty, even a starving person can't eat this. I was again starving 3o minutes after the diet bar and tuna.

OK heck with it, I had bought a pint of barbecue and slaw the first day, I ate some of that. See, the one thing I will say is that it took care of my hunger and made me satisfied with the meal, which is important.

Unfortunately it did not take care of my carb craving and I broke down and ate some strawberry yogurt with berries, which has too many carbs. Then, I started eating boiled peanuts, which I had cooked a few days ago. TOO MANY CARBS!

For lunch today I had two bowls of unshelled boiled peanuts. Hope to see some progress in the morning. Getting ready to go to costco and see about putting this thing on turbo with some Alli.

Middle of Day Two

Alright, middle of day two here. Last night I pulled an all nighter at the office and skipped dinner. Got home at about 7:00 A.M. and had to be in court early. Stepped on the scale to see an incredible 205.5 pounds. I lost 6.5 pounds on the first day. This is awesome because now I will not have to be on this diet but 5 days, then I can eat like a pig for 3 more years and do it again.

Obviously, I did not really lose 6.5 pounds in a day. Not sure what the other factors were to get this reading but it's better than gaining weight. Or, maybe my body is so used to processing obscene amounts of ice cream and beer that I didn't know how good my metabolism really is.

Starving around lunch today, went and ate salad bar with no carbs, lots of ranch dressing, and large amounts of bacon and ham in keeping with pork theme. I was gonna go to Cracker Barrell for pork loin and vegetables but knew if I went in there I would eat at least 4 pieces of cornbread. Was hungry five minutes after I left lunch, and I am hungry now. Went to Staples to get some envelopes and read the back of every piece of candy in the whole store for carb info but did not buy any. Looking forward to tomorrow and being under 200 already.

Day One update

I weighed in this morning at a hefty 212 pounds, my beginning weight.

I got hungry mid-morning and stopped and ate half a regular size bag of pork rinds and drank a Diet Mountain Dew.

For lunch, I went to Smithfield's Chicken & Barbecue and ate about 6 ounces of chopped pork and a serving of cole slaw. I was proud of myself because I ordered unsweet tea, and they gave me sweet. After taking a few sips to make sure it was indeed sweet tea, I traded it for unsweet. This is something I would not have done in the past.

Sarted boiling a bag of raw peanuts in chicken broth and salt water at 2:30 P.M. Will post again tomorrow with day 2 weight and evening food intake.

In the Beginning

Depsite my marriage to a dietitian, who is incredibly patient and tolerant of my poor eating habits, I have let myself get rather chunky over the last few years. I have decided to go on a diet because right before court a few weeks ago, a button popped off my pants, so I had to maneuver my belt in such a way as to hide the popped button and keep my pants up. Then, last time I went to court, I realized I could not button the top button on my coat at all. I am also getting tired of putting on 3-4 things from my closet before one fits.

The profile picture was taken on a trip to Colorado with some friends. The waitress told me ice cream for dessert only came in one scoop servings, so I told her to go ahead and bring me three of them. Those days are over for the next month at least.

I have decided there is no way I can maintain this diet unless I make it interesting for myself. First, I am going to center the diet around my favorite food - pork. Next, I am going to limit the duration of the diet until my trip to Vegas on October 1. The goal is to lose as much as possible by then on a predominantly pork diet.
